elcome to the Writing Center
The UVA Writing Center is a writing resource staffed by graduate student tutors and available to all UVA students. Tutors work one on one with students in 50-minute appointments. We can help with drafting, revision, argument structure, and other special concerns. Several of our tutors are trained specifically for ESL. Though we can offer help at every stage of the writing process, we do not offer proofreading or editing services.
In addition to our center located in 314 Bryan Hall, the UVA Writing Center offers services at Clemons Library, John Paul Jones Arena (for athletics students only), and Brown Library. For more information, please contact either of the center’s administrators.

PREPARING FOR YOUR WRITING CENTER APPOINTMENT
Scheduling
We use an online scheduling system where you can create an account and begin scheduling appointments.
You can schedule one 50 minute tutorial per day or two 30 minute tutorials in Clemons Library for a maximum of 50 minutes. You may schedule up to five non-ENWR 1505 or 1506 appointments per semester. Appointments with our ESL tutors are not limited, however.
If you cannot make your scheduled appointment, please cancel as far ahead of time as possible. Any student who misses three appointments will be blocked from using our scheduling system.
What to Bring
-
A clean printout of your paper, no longer than 10 pages.
-
A copy of any relevant assignment sheets for your essay.
-
Anything you will need to take notes.
What to Expect
During a 50-minute session a tutor will read through your paper, or selected portions of a longer paper, and evaluate your argument for structure, reasonableness, strength of evidence, clarity, and overall effectiveness. The tutor will then discuss with you some suggestions for how to revise and improve your paper.
Sessions in Clemons Library will last 30 minutes each, though you may book up to two consecutively.
Just finished an appointment? Please fill out our tutorial survey and let us know how we're doing.
