Creative Writing MFA Program

Instructions for Completing the Henry Hoyns and Poe/Faulkner Fellowship Application

The Creative Writing Program at the University of Virginia offers several Henry Hoyns and Poe/Faulkner Fellowships in both fiction and poetry to incoming students. Fellows must enroll as full-time candidates for the M.F.A. degree in Creative Writing.

Due to state regulations governing our program, it is not possible to provide tuition waivers or reductions to incoming students, even those who are Henry Hoyns or Poe/Faulkner Fellows. Therefore, prospective candidates should be aware that tuition charges will come out of their fellowships.

An applicant may submit to both the prose and the poetry sections, but his or her submissions for both must be complete and separate--that is, an application must be completed for each genre. No applicant will be awarded more than one Fellowship. A Fellowship cannot be deferred.

Fellows must remain at the University of Virginia during the academic year for which they have been awarded the Hoyns or Poe/Faulkner, and must be enrolled full-time. The payment schedule for the fellowships is as follows: tuition and fees are taken out at the beginning of each semester with the remainder of the fellowship disbursed in even amounts on the first of each month between September and May.

The one-page application must be accompanied by a writing sample. Fiction manuscripts may include several short stories or a section of a novel and should be approximately 25, but under no circumstances more than 30, pages in length, 12 point type, one-inch left and right margins, and double-spaced. Poets should send a sheaf of poems of approximately 6 to 10 pages. Applications and manuscript submissions must be postmarked no later than January 2, 2008.
